While I was on the road touring this summer, the opportunity and subject of how to transform old pain into strength came up a lot.
So the question is, How do we let go of old pain and really transform it into beneficial, positive fuel for our lives?
Our lives lived become an accumulation of memories, experiences, expansion and contraction points. Our triggers from past experiences can happen simply when we think about or spend time with family, when we hear updates about an old partner or spouse or when we think about a friendship or job that ended abruptly. It’s hard extracting the lesson when we’ve been hurt. It’s hard for many to step back and look at the situation through a bigger lens, but it’s necessary.
When we let go of “this happened to me,” we realize that sometimes things happen to evolve us, to eject us from one situation into another.
Sometimes the people that we love the most, bring out the most pain and if we learn to extract the fuel, we grow stronger because of it. Experiences that are jarring and unprocessed leave us walking around protected and limited to avoid those types of things from happening again. This reaction, while it protects us, shuts off a flow of life that we need in order to thrive.
If you think about something that happened in the past and it pisses you off, shuts you down or makes you feel powerless, it is robbing you from your freedom and living to the fullest! Sometimes we are given major overhauls to work through, sometimes there is simply residual energy to clean up.
